A cozy cabin for two in the Belgian countryside

Story.

A wooden cabin has stood on this land since 1961. Years later, Daniel and his wife walked us back to it. A weathered sign still hung by the door: Le Hogar, Spanish for hearth and home, the place you retreat to.

We rebuilt it on the same footprint, in the same wood. The name and the purpose stayed.

The original cabin, in black and white The original cabin under the trees

The cabin.

Solid timber, floor-to-ceiling windows, and nothing but meadow for neighbors. Tucked among the fields of the Condroz, yet close to everything.

A forest trail in fall

The region.

Bordered to the north by the Sambre and Meuse valleys, the Condroz unfolds as a wide, rolling plateau on both sides of the upper Meuse: meadows, woods, sunken lanes and stone farmhouses. This is Belgium's quiet side, between Namur and Liège.

One of the village châteaux at sunset

The village.

Vyle-et-Tharoul is a Condroz village crossed by the Vyle stream, which joins the Hoyoux to the west. Meadows, fields and woods surround it, along with several farms, the 1859 church of Saint-Martin and three châteaux: Vyle, Tharoul and Bagatelle.

Getting here

A car is the easiest way to get here. The cabin sits at the end of a private lane, with parking on site.
